Frequently Asked Questions

What is Convivium?
Convivium is an independent, creative and results-oriented company specialising in director, board and executive assessment and development. It is based in North London and has five members plus a pool of experienced and respected long-term associates.

What does Convivum do?
We support chairpeople to upgrade the performance of their boards and executives to meet their needs for wealth creation, competitive advantage and conformance.

What differentiates Convivium from other similar claimants?
  • We have been in this business for nearly 25 years - unlike the many consultancies that moved into this area after the Combined Code.
  • Our work goes beyond assessing and optimising personal contributions to a deep understanding and experience of board and leadership dynamics. This embraces not just relations within the board or executive but between leadership groups and major investors too - a factor often overlooked.
  • We are a small, flexible and creative company with unique technologies: we keep ahead of the competition and enjoy adapting to the chair's evolving needs rather than dictating standard processes.
  • Our clients insist that we are better.
Who are your clients and what have you done for them?
BP, Cadbury Schweppes, Dixons, HFAM, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Rexam, Waterstones... many more. For outline case studies look under "Client list".

Why do they need Convivium?
They may be concerned that their board & executive are not fully competent to handle major challenges - strategic direction, mergers and acquisitions, organic growth, new roles or new directors. They may have falling profits, dominant directors, conflicts of interest, differences in remuneration policy, or be worried that their board is complacent. Succession planning can be the issue, or investor pressure...

How do you operate?
We establish trust by listening and responding to the insights and ideas of all relevant directors. We provide constructive external feedback - written or verbal as needed - including comparison with best practice and recommendations. We provide a framework and systematic approach to co-design and implement measurable and inspiring development programmes with mentoring and high-level skills transfer. We review progress against agreed success criteria and suggest next steps.

What qualifies you for this work?
Experience. Experience. Experience. Plus an academic grounding and training in psychology and the sociology of change - specialist disciplines that ideally complement most chairpersons' own training and experience.

And what does the client have to say about Convivium?
  • "You combine the whole board perspective with individual contributions. That is of enormous value."
    Sir John Egan
  • "Timing and effectiveness of decision taking is a critical component of corporate life. Convivium's analysis of individual styles has helped make these understandable in a team context."
Peter Butler, CEO, Hermes Focus Asset Management
  • "The work was impactful in allowing better communications leading to improved decision making and successful conflict resolution - it contributed to business strategy, board development and overall business operations."
Stevie Lucas, Chairman, Vertex Inc, USA
